rocket3.jpgjen3.jpgWe had a full day at the Studio, with visits from a families from different parts of the northeast. Friends from Long Island had been to Monteverde, Costa Rica, so they took home a Q for Quetzal. Jeremy asked for a rocket, so a rocket he got! (with George, of course) We talked about the Journey Saved Courious George, learning about the Rey’s escape from Paris in 1939.

$35,000 Funds New Initiative at The Community School

The Community School in South Tamworth, NH is one of the Rey Center’s close partners. It provided the seedlings for the Curious Gourds Gardens for the last two years, and has given advice on the development of the Curious Gourds CSA. We are excited to hear of the Comunity Schools’ new Rural Sustainable Schools project.

img_1538.jpgThe Community School of South Tamworth recently received $35,000 to fund work on its new initiative, The Rural Sustainable Schools project. Designed to shift the funding paradigm for rural schools, whether public or private, this model will directly connect curriculum based on sustainability themes and tied to nationally-accepted standards to the real-life management of a school¨s working assets.

Designed with John Cleveland of the Innovation Network for Communities, this new model for transforming rural education will educate students while it preserves and restores the community¨s ecosystems, helps build the social fabric of the community and maintain its cultural heritage, and contributes to local economic development. Starry Night

stars.jpg

The above photo by Steven Scrimshaw is a 15 minute exposure from the Sandwich Mountain meteor.jpgFarm. The length of the exposure allows the the stars to travel, and one can see their circular movement around the pole star ! all except one celestial object (middle right) that is moving in a straight line. This is probably a meteor.

The colors of the stars can be more easily seen in this long exposure, especially in the blowup to the right (which also shows the meteor). Also note the orange/yellow glow on the horizon. This is light pollution from Lincoln, again more evident through the long exposure.

Trail Crew Finishes up Work for the Season

jack.jpg

Above: Trail Crew leader Jack Powell at Fletcher Cascades.

steps.jpgThe 2007 Sandwich Range Trail Crew is finished up the summer season on WVAIA trails this week. Under the excellent guidance of Trail Crew leader Jack Powell and technical advice from Ryan Harvey, this year’s cadre of Student Conservation Association (SCA) interns ! Nathan Kish, Raphael Magarik, Justin Kinney! and local volunteers performed more of the difficult and demanding “level II” trail work than any crew of recent years. There are many people and groups to thank: the NH Trails Bureau gave the Rey Center and the WVAIA a 21,000 grant; both the WVAIA and the Rey Center provided additional funding; the Town of Waterville Valley gave logistical and administrative support; Jenny Price of the United States Forest Service provided oversight and support; the White Mountain Athletic Club allowed the crew to shower at their facility.

Festival Breakfast

breakfast2.jpg

Above: Ed Lorenz shares his memories of Hans and Margret Rey at the Curious George Cottage Festival Breakfast.

breakfast-10.jpgAn overflowing crowd of over 70 people attended Curious George Cottage Family Festival Breakfast. Nat Scrimshaw spoke of his memories of Hans and Margret and how the Rey Center is carrying on their legacy, and then invited others to share their memories.

We heard of Hans’ morning swims in the old pool in the breakfast-03.jpgNorth end of the Valley, including his pretending to be a turtle and giving rides to children. There was also the old drain pipe from which Hans magically threw his voice, convincing children they were speaking to little people living in the drain. We recalled nights looking at stars and walks in the woods. There the long conversations on history and politics and stories of escaping from Paris as the Nazis invaded. We recalled chalk-talks in the old Waterville Inn, and visits to Hans studio where he swiftly draw Curious George, Pretzel or Cecily G. Giraffe.
